Kaunertal , the Otztal Alps, Austria
Kaunertal is the last and most westward glacier valley in the Tyrol. You can get there using a narrow road coming from Riedl. The first ski resort is situated in Fendels. There are gentle slopes for beginners or intermediate skiers, very suitable for
family winter holiday.Your children will certainly be fond of long toboggan run. Further along the road behind the town of Feichten there is the Glacier of Kaunertal.
The Glacier of Kaunertal is a bit smaller and flatter than the other glaciers in the Tyrol, yet it is not so frequently visited. Along two main lifts (the left having a middle station) there are
broad runs – at the top quite steep, but from the middle comfortably relaxing. Other broad runs are situated entirely on the left, along Nőrderjoch lifts. The runs are suitable for carving as well. A steep advanced run goes down from the Karlsspitz mountain, which can be reached by a lift. The run is varied, at the beginning steep with lots of terrain edges. Towards the valley there is a meandering blue-red run.
The construction of a power station and a reservoir in 1961 – 65 as well as the construction of a road in the direction of the Glacier and ski resort in particular enabled Kaunertal to be world-famous. However, while talking to some old residents in the village of Feichten, you can see that it has kept its village character. For those tourists, who are in need of "showing off" during their vacation, this is not the right place to go. Nevertheless, among local prominent guests who regularly come to stay here can be found names such as Girardelli, Raich, Eberharter, Knauss and other top skiers.
