Gerlos , the Zillertal Alps, Austria
Gerlos, situated high above the Zillertal Valley (1,246m), represents a joy of the snowy peaks. A cable car connects it with the Zillertal arena and through Wilde Krimml it is also connected to Zell am Ziller, thus creating a ski resort of an immense size.
There is no place for worries about the quality of skiing and tobogganing as this village is deep under snow since December until the Easter. Then it becomes ideal for spring skiing, too. Even though the population of Gerlos quadruples over the winter season due to the winter sports fans, the place manages to keep its original atmosphere. Lovely houses with richly decorated gables and wooden balconies complete the typical Alp atmosphere of the village.
The runs here vary from easy to intermediate levels. The more challenging ones can be found on the steep hillside of the Krummbach Valley. On the other hand, you will take delight in riding on the Wilde Krimml slopes to Zell. Snowboard fans will find their amusement in the Fun Park by the Fussalm Express funicular station. Well groomed trails for cross-country skiers wind along the Gerlos stream and through the Schönachtal Valley. More advanced skiers should choose a track to the Wildgerlostal Valley or the high-situated trail at Gerlosplatte.
Gerlos with its manifold offer of both skiing and aprés-ski activities suits well the non-skiers, too. Uniquely beautiful are the hiking trails in the Schönachtal and Wildgerlostal Valleys or in Krummbachras on the other side of the Valley. A starving hiker will find pleasant chalets with rich aprés-ski offers at the end of the trails.
